David E. Luzzi, PhD
Chief Scientific Advisor
Dr. Luzzi is currently the Director of the Nanotechnology Institute and
Professor of Materials Science at the University of Pennsylvania. His
research projects in nano-scale systems are focused on materials processing
and applications of functionalized nanotubes and nanoparticles. His research
group invented, characterized, and developed methods to synthesis a new
class of nanomaterials, which they coined nanotube peapods. His work in
this area continues with the development of new compositions and applications
for this unique class of nanomaterials. Dr. Luzzi has authored over 100
papers in peer reviewed journals. He is the 2002 winner of the George
Heilmeier Award for Research Innovation. He is also a member of the Air
Force Scientific Advisory Board, was a science and technology advisor for
the Chief of Naval Operations Strategic Studies Group, a Fellow of the
Defense Science Study Group, and is a past-President of the Philadelphia
Society for Microscopy. Dr. Luzzi received a Ph.D. in Materials Science
from Northwestern University and a B.E. in Engineering Physics from
Stevens Institute of Technology. Since joining the faculty at the
University of Pennsylvania in 1987, he served as a visiting professor at
Kyoto University from 1996 through 1997.
